U.S. society, without question, is grossly unequal in just about every aspect. Economic inequality looks us squarely and starkly in the face everyday, as we see conditions of homelessness and poverty co-existing with excessive wealth. Racial and gender inequality permeate our social structures and institutions; citizens and politicians have yet to muster the will or ethical compass to pass an Equal Rights Amendment. We continue to see the civil rights of LGBTQ people up for debate and even denied. And yet at the same time, America claims to hold equality as a hallmark value of our culture and politics, of the national project itself. So what’s up here? Are we just lying to ourselves? Or do we define “equality” in ways that enable us as a people and nation to justify social inequality and still claim this value? At All Things Being Equal, we think this question is worth asking and exploring. In this online journal you’ll find writings that analyze culture, society, and politics through the lens of egalitarianism, seeking to unlock for readers the meaning of this value, our shortcomings and contradictions in realizing this value, and the benefits of achieving an egalitarian society—economically, politically, and culturally.

We offer this journal as an exploration of egalitarian values through all forms of social, cultural, and political analysis and exploration through all forms of writing, including but not limited to short articles, essays, poetry, fiction, and more.
